Old Nissan electric forklift won’t move

I have an old Nissan electric forklift that is fully charged, starts up, forks work, lights & horn work, but when I put it into gear it won’t engage. When I put it in drive it doesn’t engage & reverse beeps but doesn’t engage as well. Normally when put in gear and the pedal is pressed you hear the winding of the gears and it moves, but now it doesn’t do anything. Does anyone have any ideas of where I should start to analyze the issue?
